the record

Not a single fatal accident since its first flight

ITA Airways flew for the first time on 15 October 2021, from Milan Linate to Bari, and no ITA Airways flight has had a fatal accident since. It flies from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate with an all-Airbus fleet — A220s and A320-family jets in Europe, A330neos and A350s on long-haul routes — and carried about 16.2 million passengers in 2025.

ITA is not Alitalia under a new name. It is a new company, set up by the Italian state, that bought Alitalia's brand and some of its aircraft and other assets, and in 2021 the European Commission found it is not Alitalia's economic successor. Alitalia's record — its last fatal accident was flight 404 near Zurich in 1990 — belongs to Alitalia and is not counted here.

The best-known event in ITA's short history is flight 609 from New York to Rome in April 2022: French controllers could not reach the cockpit for about ten minutes while the A330 cruised on autopilot, with the co-pilot on an approved rest. The aircraft stayed on its route and altitude; ITA said passenger safety was never compromised and dismissed the captain, who denied having fallen asleep.

ITA has been an IATA member since its first day of flying and joined Star Alliance in April 2026. Lufthansa holds a minority stake and is moving to majority control. ITA is overseen by Italy's civil aviation authority under European (EASA) safety rules, and serious incidents are investigated independently by Italy's air safety agency, ANSV.

ITA Airways safety questions

How safe is ITA Airways?

ITA Airways has never had a fatal accident — not once since its first flight in October 2021. On airlines like ITA Airways, the chance of being in a fatal accident is about 1 in 80 million per flight. Every fact on this page is sourced — the list is at the bottom.

What is ITA Airways' safety rating?

There is no single official safety rating for airlines; the scores some websites publish are their own formulas. What can be checked is the record: no fatal accident since ITA began flying in 2021. It is a member of IATA, the airlines' trade body, which requires its members to pass IATA's operational safety audit (IOSA).

Is ITA Airways the same as Alitalia?

No. ITA is a new company that took over Alitalia's brand and part of its fleet when Alitalia stopped flying in October 2021, and the European Commission found it is not Alitalia's economic successor. Alitalia's accidents, the last in 1990, are not ITA's record.
