Airbus A350 safety record
No one on board an A350 has died in an accident. One A350 was destroyed, in a 2024 runway collision at Tokyo — and all 379 people on board got out.
No one on board an A350 has died in an accident
One A350 has been lost. On 2 January 2024 a Japan Airlines A350 landing at Tokyo Haneda collided with a Coast Guard aircraft that was on the runway. All 379 people on the A350 got out while it burned; five of the six crew on the Coast Guard aircraft were killed.
That is the only A350 hull loss on record, and no passenger or crew member aboard an A350 has died in an accident.
The A350 in numbers
A flexible wing, and a lot of it
The A350's composite wing is long and designed to flex. In bumpy air you can see the curved wingtips rise and fall — the wing taking up the gust rather than passing it straight into the cabin. It's a large aircraft too, and the bigger and more heavily loaded the wing, the less a given gust moves it.
The wing also changes shape slightly in flight to stay efficient, which is part of why it looks so smooth and curved from the cabin.
Nine across in economy
Almost every airline fits nine economy seats across the A350, in three blocks of three with two aisles. Its cabin is a little wider than the 787's, and the drawing fits those nine seats and two aisles into the published width so you can see where that extra space goes.
Nine across here is a comfortable fit by modern long-haul standards. The window seats have the aircraft's large windows; the aisle seats give you somewhere for an elbow.
How big it really is
The A350 sits between the 787 and the 777 in size. Its wings, with their curved tips, are among the longest on any twin-engine jet, and the larger version carries almost as many people as a 777.

Airbus A350 questions
How safe is the A350?
No one on board an A350 has died in an accident. One A350 was destroyed, in a 2024 runway collision at Tokyo — and all 379 people on board got out. Every figure on this page is sourced — the list is at the bottom.
What is special about the A350's cabin?
It's pressurised to a lower altitude than most older airliners and can be kept slightly more humid, the cabin is wide and quiet, and the lighting changes through the flight. Together they're designed to reduce the tired, dried-out feeling of a long flight.
Is the A350 bigger than the 787?
Slightly. The A350's cabin is a little wider and the larger A350 version is longer than the largest 787, though both are mid-to-large long-haul twins of similar design.
Is the A350 good in turbulence?
It's a large aircraft with long, flexible wings, so it tends to ride bumpy air well. Like every airliner, it's built to take far more than any turbulence it will meet.
