A card that always showed the same four fields would be a widget. This one rewrites its own headline for the phase you are in: a countdown to boarding while you are still landside, the gate once there is one, a progress line across the route once you are airborne, and "landing in 1:23" for the last stretch — which is the number the person collecting you actually wants.
The ride chip carries the turbulence forecast for what is immediately ahead, so the one glance answers both questions at once.
It is pushed, not polled, so it stays current without the app running and without eating your battery. On Android the same information arrives as notifications, since Android has no equivalent surface.
Lock Screen and Dynamic Island questions
Which phones support this?
iPhone with iOS 16.1 or later for the Lock Screen card; the Dynamic Island needs a phone that has one. Android does not have an equivalent system feature, so on Android the same updates come through as notifications.
Does it drain the battery?
No. Updates are pushed from the server when something changes rather than the app waking up to check, which is the cheap way round.
Is it free?
Live Activities are part of Pro. The underlying free alerts — preflight, reminder, arrival, cancellation — reach every account as normal notifications.
Can I have it for someone else's flight?
Yes. Any flight you track can have its own card, which is genuinely useful when you are driving to the airport to collect someone.
